The scrape of a cupboard door sliding open could be heard in the dim, dingy kitchen, soon followed by the click of a button. In an instant a cone of light appeared, illuminating the contents of the cupboard. The glow unveiled the scarce few items inside, an empty box of crackers and a pair of rectangular tin cans. Peering inside was the face of a boy, no older than twelve, a heavy stick flashlight in his hand.
